WiP Wednesday - Batman edition

It's already Wednesday? That was a fast week for me.

I finished my color wheel quilt and even entered it in the Bloggers' Quilt Festival. I'm not finished with the rainbow colors though. I'm itching to make something else with all those colors but I haven't found just the right project for me yet. I'll keep looking.

This week I'm working on the Batman side of the superhero quilt. It's been funner than I thought it would be and it is going together very quickly. I really only have about 9 more seams to put together and that side will be finished.

Does anybody else count how many more rows or blocks that have to be attached before a quilt is finished? I seem to do that when I'm down to the final few.

Next up will be to finish designing the Superman side so I can get it all sewn together and off to the long arm quilter. This is going to make one little 4 year old boy very very happy!

Happy Wednesday! Only 2 more days of school for this year! yeah! Hello summer, here we come!

Bloggers' Quilt Festival - Color Wheel

I'm happy to be linking up to the spring Bloggers' Quilt Festival sponsored by Amy's Creative Side. There are so many beautiful quilts linked up. There's a lot of very creative quilters out there that have been very busy.

I'm excited to finally show my color wheel quilt. I have loved this quilt from the moment I saw it in Joelle Hoverson's book and knew I wanted to make one. I enjoyed every single step in the process of making the top. My eyes just love to follow the colors around the circle and my brain can't help but chant "Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet" over and over as I complete the circle. Almost like I'm still checking to make sure I have the colors in the correct order.

I made the top a few months ago but I just quilted it this weekend and attached the binding yesterday. At first I was very intimidated by the actual quilting of this quilt. I was afraid I might not do it right and then I would mess it all up. I learned that it I shouldn't have been scared and I shouldn't have put it off for so long.

It is such a great feeling to be finished and know that I sewed every inch of it all by myself. This one is a keeper for me, myself and I. I might let my family touch it though - if they are lucky. Actually, I might find a place to hang it on a wall in my house. I've never been one to want to hang a quilt on the wall but this might just be a first.

WiP Wednesday continues...

Ongoing Project:

So here I am chugging along on my color wheel quilt. I do not enjoy machine quilting on my sewing machine. It's kind of like wrestling a greased pig. I've never actually wrestled a greased pig, but I can imagine how difficult it would be. Well, that's how I feel about shifting and scrunching a quilt around on my machine. This quilt, however, was kind of the exception. I only had to follow the straight line so that made it a lot easier. Maybe it's because I didn't have to think and wrestle at the same time. I only had to wrestle the quilt around since following the lines was kind of a no-brainer.

Now all the quilting is finished and the blue guide lines have been washed away. Getting the binding on is all that's left to do. I want to bind it today so I can start my next project.

New Project:

Next up is the reversible Batman/Superman quilt using some of these fabrics.

That will be fun! I'm not use to making little boy quilts so it will be a nice change of pace.

Oh yeah, look at this cute little car decal I found here on Etsy. I ordered one for a couple of my quilt guild friends too and can't wait to give it to them.

Lovin' Wonky Stars

I love wonky stars. You know, as opposed to the stars that are not "wonky". I just think they are so interesting to look at. At first I was a little tentative in putting the right amount of "wonky" in the blocks but I quickly realized that if the blocks aren't wonky enough they come out looking more like a mistake than a block made that way on purpose. These ended up being very fun to make with no stress at all. There's a great tutorial here for a 12" block but the sizes can easily be adjusted for whatever size block you want to make. I saw a quilt like this on Ashley's blog and instantly fell in love with it and knew I had to make one for myself.

I drive past this neat old aqua fence every day and it was just a great spot to show off my quilt. Right after I finished my photo shoot I looked a little to the right and notice a huge "NO TRESPASSING" sign. Oops. I didn't go on the property, just borrowed the fence for a second or two. Sorry.

This is the back of the quilt. Hello one little white star down in the corner. I'm so happy with the way the quilting turned out. My mother-in-law the longarmer quilted it for me and did a fabulous job! Thanks Droogie Poogie! The random and angular straight line quilting is just what this quilt called for.

I love the swirls in the middle of the stars, too. I also added a little strip of color to the binding to break up some of the aqua.

Picture day for Picture Day

This quilt is finally complete and off to it's new home. That makes me happy! I made this quilt from an Oh, Fransson! pattern named Picture Day. It is a double sided quilt so it is totally reversible. Oh hey, did I mention it's green? I love it!

This is the front.

Here we have the back. I love love love the white framing around the wonky blocks.

I am very pleased with the all over quilting pattern that was chosen for this quilt. I think it is called popcorn. Thank you longarmer!

I made this quilt last year and for some reason it just sat around in a pile for a long time. Then I sent it to the long arm quilter and when I got it back it sat around in another pile. Finally, yesterday, I attached the binding and took it to my friend last night. She was VERY happy with it. I think it will be gorgeous in her home but I will still get to visit it.

So, I can mark that off my WiP list and move on to the next item. Good deal!

That's a picture of my sad and lonely sewing machine. Poor little thing. She hasn't even been turned on in a month. A whole month of 30 days. That's crazy for me.

That's my even sadder and lonelier design wall. Awww. It's just standing there begging for some fabric to be arranged on it.

I usually sew every single day but ever since spring break, back in April, I've just been in a funk. I'm making myself pull out of it though. I must, I must, I must increase my bust! I mean...sewing time. That was a little reference to a Judy Blume book I read in fourth grade. Anybody know which book I'm referring to?

My current design WiP is a Superhero quilt for a young boy. One side will be all Superman fabric and the flip side will be all Batman fabric. I will be using the Just Can't Cut It pattern for the Batman side but I designed the Superman side myself. I used AutoCad to draw out my design and figure out the dimensions. I just wish the colors would have shown up in the picture.

The first sewing project to be tackled is to apply this binding...

to this Picture Day quilt. This quilt was designed by Oh, Fransson! and was a lot of fun to make. I would definitely make another one. I love the back as much as the front if not more.

I will be so glad to see that quilt bound and labeled. It is going to live with a good friend of mine. The youth at my church had an auction to raise money for summer camp and I put that quilt in the auction and she won the bidding on it. This quilt will be so lovely in her home and that makes me happy.

Goals for the week:

- Bind Picture Day quilt

- Make backing for Color Wheel quilt

- Quilt and bind Color Wheel quilt - doing this one myself - eeek!

- Make backing for Single Girl quilt and send to the longarmer.

I could go on and on but I'm going to stop there for now. I don't want to get crazy with my plans for the week.

Flickr Favs

I have so many photos listed in my favorites file on Flickr. I just love to browse all the photos of quilts and drool over them. Flickr is my drool tool. I'll get on a kick and try to find all the quilts anyone has posted using a particular line of fabric so I'll search through all of them and save some into my favorites file. Then later I'll be on a kick of quilts only using red and aqua fabric so I'll spend hours searching through those and saving favorites of them. I could absolutely waste a whole day doing this.
