100 Quilts for Kids - 2012

It's time again...

Katie from Swim, Bike, Quilt is hosting this charity quilt drive again this year.  This time the drive is going from July 1 through October 15.  It will be a great time to make a quilt or two, link to her site and donate to a kids organization.  See this post on her blog for more details.

Twin girls

I am so proud of these two quilts.  I just love the red & aqua color scheme.  I made these for my cousins twin girls that were born in late May.  I'm a little late getting them to her but I don't think she will mind because I'm pretty sure she's busy taking care of 2 little ones right now.

My sweet dog wanted to get in on the photo shoot.

I chose a precious dark pink polka dot for the backing and binding.

Here's a closeup of the quilting which is just straight line quilted 1/4" away from each seam. I did it all by myself!

This is the dog that stole my heart and made me a dog person...sweet Aggie Belle.

Guy Quilts

I finished two quilts last week, and I am proud to say I even quilted them all by myself.  They are both quilts for teenage boys.  I've never made a quilt for a teenager, much less a teenage boy so I was very sensitive about not making the quilt look girly or toddlerish.  

My Sunday School class is sponsoring a cottage full of boys at a children's home this year.  We are giving each boy a big birthday bash and he gets to choose what he wants to do.  The first party was last week and we had a laser tag party.  FUN!  The main gift is the party of course but I wanted to give each boy something to remember our class by and to let them know they are loved.

This quilt is for Robert.  I saw this quilt a while back on another blog and copied Leigh's great idea.  The simple stripes are just so perfect to me.  I'm calling this side the front.

Both boys were completely surprised to get a quilt and seemed to really love them.  I hope they will keep them forever!

WiP Wednesday

It has been a long time since I've posted on a WiP Wednesday but here I am with a little work to show.

My cousin is VERY pregnant with twin girls and I am making these little quilts for her new babies.  I had been searching for just the perfect pattern to use for quite a while.  I wanted the two quilts to coordinate but not be exactly alike.  I couldn't get my mind settled on just one pattern until one day one of my favorite bloggers, Maureen, posted a simple little baby quilt she was making and then it "clicked" with me.  I decided to copy her simple little quilt and use a red/aqua/pink color combination.

 I think the appliqued letter just adds that little special touch to the quilts.  Plus, the twins will know exactly which quilt is theirs.

I'm going to quilt these myself so I'm pretty excited about that.

Plus Quilt finished

I'm so happy to show you my new favorite quilt.  I am so in love with this color scheme right now, too bad it doesn't match anything in my house.  Ha!

During spring break my girls and I went to VA to visit The Grandmomma and she taught me how to use her longarm quilting machine.  I didn't do that great of a job making my "orange peel" pattern but at least I can say I did this one all by myself.  I'll do better with more experience I'm sure.

It is the perfect size for a lap quilt so it has already gotten a lot of use on our sofa.  I always have a quilt covering my legs when I'm sitting down.  Actually, I guess my girls have gotten more use out of it than I have because I haven't had much time to sit down lately.

Relay for Life Quilt

I'm so happy to share my most recently finished quilt.  My sister runs the Relay for Life drive for her company and she asked me to make a quilt for her to enter into a raffle.  Yay!  What a great excuse to make a quilt.  I chose to use Kate Spain's Terrain fabric for this quilt and based it on this quilt made by Bryan House Quilts.

These blocks are each 26" square and with the added borders came out to a perfect queen sized quilt.  I thought that since this quilt will be in a raffle it needed to be "traditional" enough for those who like traditional quilts and yet still have a "modern" flair to it.  I hope I succeeded in achieving that balance.

The backing is mostly Kona purple (even though it's showing more blueish in the picture) with a strip of Terrain on the back.

A friend of mine, Gail, from my quilting guild did the longarm quilting on it and I think she did a perfect job!  Thank you Gail!

I made this quilt in memory of my father who died of cancer and my sister who is a cancer survivor!  I hope and pray this quilt raises a lot of money for cancer research and finds a home where it is well loved.

Hellooooo...

I am excited to show a preview of one of my current projects.  This quilt is for my oldest daughter and will hang in her room when it is finished. Yay!

I'm pretty sure there are 149 leaves on the tree and 4 birds, one for each member of my family.  The birds are missing from this picture but you can see the white space where they will be perched soon.  All those leaves are ready to be appliqued now. I'm a little scared about how long that will take to do but at least I won't be bored anytime soon.
